Doctors are reporting an increase in the number of middle-aged people seeking treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases.
The increase is being explained by people starting new relationships following the breakdown of marriages and long-term partnerships.

This group of over-45s - dubbed the 'nouveau active' – are as vulnerable as the young and may be just as embarras
sed about getting help, GPs say.

Sheila Burgess, practice manager at The Nap Surgery in Kings Langley, said: "There is a massive increase in the spread of infections in both the young and the more mature age group - who are increasingly entering into new relationships post partnership and marriage break-ups.

"This nouveau active group are as vulnerable as the young and may be equally as embarrassed as teenagers are when needing to seek help about their sexual health."

The surgery opened a new sexual health clinic on Monday (October 6) to help address the problem.

It offers testing, treatment and advice every Monday from 4pm to 7pm to anyone of any age and an appointment is not necessary.

For more information contact the surgery on 07918 911920.

The number of sexually-transmitted diseases in Hertfordshire is on the rise and in the past criticism has been levelled at the lack of services in Dacorum.

Until now people have had to travel to clinics in Watford and St Albans.
