Old fashioned fire engines and annual salaries of £80 give a glimpse into what life was like in Hemel Hempstead in days gone by.
These fantastic old pictures are from a collection of images taken in Nash Mills and Apsley between 1800 and World War Two.
Smart looking Miss Merey Everitt was headmistress of Nash Mills school from 1911 until her retirement in 1932.
The teacher received an annual salary of £80.
Miss Everitt is just one of the past residents featured in our online heritage picture special, taken from an extensive collection of black and white treasures from reader Peter Ward.
Can you fill in the name gaps for this Dickinson fire crew, probably snapped at Shendish around 1929?
Fred Soar, Jack Anderson, Perey Symons, Fred Kerry, are pictured in the back row. In front is Eddie Dorrofield (far left) and Fred Langton (far right), and Harry Hobday is standing.
The photos include a shot of Nash Mills from 1914, in which the area is unrecognisable apart from the Three Tuns pub, plus an image of partly-demolished homes on Belswains Lane following an air raid in 1941.
There is also a photo of Nash Mills School children from around 1920 and a line up of engineers and millwrights from 1874.
Mr Ward has even sourced an image of Nash Mills' horse drawn fire brigade from 1896.
